Jeep Cherokee Oil Filters

The oil filter in your Jeep Cherokee captures contaminants in the SUV's motor oil and removes them. If your Cherokee didn't have one, those pollutants would accumulate in its engine, wearing out the oil pump, its bearings, and other parts.

Unfortunately, even the best oil filters can eventually clog, wear out, and degrade anyway, usually from use and old age. If you suspect your SUV has a bad one, there are signs you can look for. They range from low oil pressure and dirtier-than-usual exhaust to spluttering and metallic noises coming from the engine. If you're seeing such symptoms, do an inspection, and change the oil filter if you need to, as soon as possible.

When to do that is straightforward: during every oil change or every other one. That's either every 3 months or every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, whichever comes first. The exception: if your SUV has an extended-life oil filter, which can last 10,000 miles at a time.

So, what oil filter does your Jeep Cherokee need, then? There are several kinds to choose from. They can be made of everything from paper to synthetic fiber, and flow rate varies. A full-flow filter, for example, traps particles as small as 25 microns, while a lower-flow filter with secondary media catches and removes those as small as 5 to 10 microns.

The most important things to get right are dimensions -- specifically, thread and gasket sizes. It's critical that you use a filter that fits your vehicle. Otherwise, the filter can leak oil or detach, and the latter can cause serious (and expensive) engine damage.

Fortunately, Jeep makes figuring out what filter fits your Cherokee easy: its oil filters come from the factory designed compatible with its SUVs. You're in luck, too: you can buy one for yours online, from our auto parts store.
