There are two types of air filters in your Jeep Cherokee. One is for the engine, and you can find it either under the hood or, if your SUV has a cold air intake, near a fender or above a wheel well. The other is for the cabin, and you'll find it most often behind the paneling on your passenger's side.

Air filter shapes vary, from flat panel and circular to cylindrical, and their fibers can be made of synthetic paper, foam, cotton, and even metal. Whatever kind your SUV uses, how it works is the same, and straightforward: its pleats trap airborne contaminants; the engine air filter keeps them out of the induction system, and thus, out of the motor, and the cabin air filter keeps them out of the heater and air conditioning ducts and away from the vents.

Unfortunately, with enough use and age, pollutants can accumulate and restrict airflow through both. When they do, engine and car HVAC problems follow. So, the best way to tell if your SUV air filters need replacing? Look for those signs. One obvious one: a lit Check Engine light on the dashboard. Other symptoms include:

  • Filter buildup and clogs
  • Excessively worn filter fibers
  • Atypical engine sounds, misfires, and power loss
  • A less-responsive throttle, resulting in problems accelerating
  • Worsening fuel economy
  • Black smoke coming from the exhaust
  • Unclean odors in the cabin

Noticing any of them? Check the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual; you may need to change air filters. Otherwise, replace them every 12,000 to 15,000 miles (once a year or so), no later than every 30,000 miles. You'll notice the benefits -- normalized fuel efficiency and emissions, and a longer-lasting engine -- almost immediately.
