Chrysler 300 Alternators

Alternators are part of the charging systems in Chrysler 300 sedans. They generate current, turning mechanical or motive energy into electrical energy -- electricity. How they do that in your car, for example, is straightforward. First, your engine runs its serpentine belt and drive belts. They turn a pulley that spins a rotor shaft, and the shaft spins magnetic coils. The coil movement produces a magnetic field -- energy that a rectifier captures as AC power and turns into DC power, which a voltage regulator manages.

As a result, your alternator charges your car battery and helps run its other electrical systems. In fact, it powers nearly everything electric, from your dashboard displays and lights, car radio, windshield wipers, and windows to your steering and even options such as heated seats.

Unfortunately, alternators do go bad sometimes times. The causes of alternator failure are often damaged or worn parts, installing the wrong accessories, and jump-starting the wrong way. Luckily, the signs of alternator problems are relatively easy to spot. They include an alternator warning light or battery warning light on the dashboard, car radio and lighting malfunctions, and a dead battery. Other signs are leaking alternator fluid, a whining engine, burning smells under your hood, and electrical system failure. Even an overtightened alternator belt can cause it.

If you see these symptoms, plug in a code reader, do an inspection, and test your car's charging system. If the results require changing your alternator, take care of it right away. Otherwise, replace it every 7 years or roughly every 80,000 to 150,000 miles. Check your owner's manual for more details.
