Your Jeep Commander should have two air filters. One is for the engine, and the other is for the cabin. The engine air filter protects the SUV's air intake and the rest of its motor from things like dirt and debris. The cabin air filter protects its heater and air conditioning system from dust and pollen.

Both are usually one of three common designs: a flat panel, circular, or a cylinder. Their fibers are often made of synthetic paper, foam, cotton, or metal. Moreover, they're pleated to capture those airborne contaminants better.

Neither last forever, though. You'll need to replace both eventually. The best way to tell when it's time for a change is to look for the signs of choked-off airflow. They include acceleration problems, engine misfires and power loss, and an unclean-smelling interior. To avoid such issues, air filters should be replaced regularly.

Of course, if you see things like a Check Engine light on the dash, a worn and/or clogged filter, worsening gas mileage, or black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe, or if you hear strange noises coming from your engine, it's almost certainly time for replacement. Otherwise, they'll need changing every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, and no later than every 30,000 miles, though. That's once a year or so.

For more details on what to do and when to do it, check your owner's manual. It'll have a maintenance schedule you can review. If it's time to buy replacements online, you can, and directly from your OEM, right here.
